Children will act out when they're young, but there may be a serious problem if they're doing it in an irrational manner on a regular basis. When they're at school, teachers will quickly notice the changes. Some parents may not recognize what's going on right away until someone else tells them.

When a parent does notice the symptoms, they'll want to speak with someone at the school to get assistance. If the school has a social worker of psychologist, they may be the initial contact person. If the school doesn't have that resource or they are not willing to assist you, consult with a private physician.

They will give the child an evaluation. If it is determined that the child is leaning toward ADHD, the physician will make referrals to see a psychiatrist, psychologist or a neurologist for additional assistance and evaluations. You need to speak with medical personnel that specialize in dealing with children that have this disorder.

Parents will need to get additional information on their child's behavior from their teacher. There are some questions they'll want to ask, such as:

" Has the child acted unusual?

" How long has this been going on?

" Have they been showing behavior that is out of line?

" Does the child get along with the classmates?

When they are tested, they may excel with certain things and fail in other things. If there are any other adults that have interacted with the child, find out if they have seen usual behavior patterns. A child that is hyperactive, impulsive and not focusing can be screened for ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

To get a diagnosis for the child, the physicians will use certain criteria. They usually abide by the guidelines that are set forth by professional groups that specialize in ADHD. Parents are allowed to read over the guidelines to get more information about their child's diagnosis.

There are times when parents and guardians can get frustrated with the way the school handles students with this disorder. Some of them don't have the resources and others just don't care. If you can't get any assistance from the school system, then you'll have to make other arrangements to get your child the treatment they need to deal with ADHD.

It's better to get the treatment they need before they get to the adolescent stage. It's easier to deal with when they're younger. Once the diagnosis has been determined, you want them to start living a normal life.
