How do I deal with a unsatisfactory veteran teacher...
This teacher has been teaching at the high school level for more than 10 years. His teaching methods and supplementary materials are good according to him but are outdated and need replacing due to constant use over the years. This teacher has been observed and rated unsatisfactory since my arrival this year. His students constantly cut his class because they feel that they are not learning. The teacher feels that he is doing a good job since he has never had any complaints about his teaching methods prior to my observations. His colleagues have made attempts to pull his coat tail about his classroom management skills, and I have had teacher coaches and professional development opportunities at his disposal. This teacher is well liked by his colleagues, as well as most students. He provides support for student groups and other school related activities. He has been reluctant to attend professional development sessions after school or on weekends and will only attend professional development seminars that are paid district sessions.
How can I, short of recommending termination, get this veteran teacher who has no clue about how to manage a classroom despite providing professional development opportunities and teacher coach support, change his outlook and become more receptive to new ideas? End of form information
